“Nothing is f**ked here, Dude!” Walter Sobchek in ‘The Big Lebowski’
Everything is ok people, just carry on, we’ve got this. Our leaders are firmly in control, the economic system is performing, global warming ain’t real, and social media will raise your children for you. Relax! Maintain your 70hr work week, buy the latest gadget, and tune in to the latest tweet from the chief twit.
It’s the message everyone wants to hear, ‘its ok’. And whilst Walter is a little coarse with his mode of pacification, his big selfish heart just wants assure “The Dude” that, either through a series of carefully orchestrated moves, or random blunt force, or dizzying decree, or divine intervention, everything will work out in their favour. Walter however, is a little affected still from his tours in Vietnam. He has a firm belief in his own infallibility, his strategic prowess, the impenetrable might of his nation, and the unwavering support of his newly conscripted faith. With all those qualities, Walter oozes the confidence of a pint-sized dictator, to face any challenge with steadfast belief that all opposing actors are shortsighted in their tenets, and operating from an ill-informed knowledge base, therefore they will be overcome.
Meanwhile, The Dude is more zen. Life has its ups n downs, strikes n gutters, so let it roll. With a White Russian in one hand, and reefer in the other, the external world exerts no lamentable pressure on his daily experience, so he is free to bumble down the road of least resistance, never needing to consider any higher order aspects which may be exerting influence on his path.
This dichotomy is one of the cornerstones Corporatopoly ventures to examine, governance vs autonomy. Where the successes and failures of each, are contributing to each others proliferation and/or exploitation. Where humanity is blissfully bounding forward as one, versus knowingly pissing on its’ own rug.

The themes of the cards which are used in Corporatopoly are loosely modelled on contemporary situations. Some of these themes are presented in brief below. In time, I hope to provide better context around each of the ideas, for now I will wait to see if any particular topic attracts attention.
Elect Cards
Blockchain Based Voting
There are many systems looking to provide voting solutions in order to stabilise the democratic process. Blockchain programming provides a low cost, tech based, auditable, alternative to traditional voting systems. Contemporary platforms offer validation of the current ballot type system whereby voters choose candidates representing parties/ideologies/wealth sectors, whereas I believe a healthier future lays with removing party based voting, and moving to a distributed network issue based system, where the voter partakes in the issue itself, rather than gambling on the ego of a political representative. Corporate Influence
When profit is the prime mover in all decisions, the value of human life is a distant second. This is clearly the case in the USA, where there is no free medical care, no annual leave, no free education, and no parental leave. Everything is geared toward squeezing the maximum out of the worker and paying them as little as possible. In order to do so, corporations destroy legal barriers via lobbyists who entice politicians to make the changes.
Healthy Housing
The construction of healthy living environments is economically beneficial over attempting to ameliorate the effects of dealing with health issues created by sub-standard housing. Civic policy can provide better basic housing, healthier indoor environments in countries where damp is and issue, better sanitation to less developed communities where housing is of a base level.
Shifting Beliefs.
The post-religious world leaves many people outside of organised faith structures which have guided the human psyche for millennia. The void of meaninglessness left behind leaves many hanging on the breeze in terms of inner guidance, and vulnerable to the temptations and vagaries of the modern world.
Clean Water
The availability of quality drinking water is essential to all. Across the world, various entities are seeking to monopolise control of water sources. Protection from corporatisation must occur to prevent communities being starved of basic human necessities.
Borderless World
In a perfect world where humanity learns to not view their fellows as leverage to profit. and in turn has dialled down the urge to exist in conflict, the notion of the nation may no longer be necessary. With the development of digital democracy, self governance processes, and integrated technologies like IOT, the need for state borders decreases. Natural boarders like mountains, deserts, rivers, and oceans, may always remain as boundaries, but equally those boundaries can be straddled by commerce, communication, and any of many human endeavours.
Decentralise Media
Moving control of media sources away from centralised power entities will minimise corporate control. While media is funded by big business, it is subservient to the views of the very few individuals who control big business, and allow the media to present information in such a way which supports their own agendas. The so-called “Fourth Estate” once delivered a narrative which was supported and funded by the state, hence delivering news which had stronger integrity, and the power to go after those who were abusing legal process, regardless of their financial and legal strength. Modern corporate media aids and abets abuse by remaining wilfully blind to corruption.
Decentralised Currency
The rise of blockchain based currencies is here. If fiat money looses its grip and trust in centrally controlled money systems evaporates, decentralised currencies will provide honest market based value, rather than centralised and corporate manipulated systems which favour those in control of monetary supply and distribution.
Positive Religion Crossover
The history of religion points to common roots. By tracking and reclaiming those roots, religions can celebrate its common ancestry, and push back upon the great divisions which have been created by power-seeking egotists within each structure. A simple focus on the morality which underwrites all mythologies can begin to reconvene the positive aspects which arose as a guide to moral behaviour.
Online Tertiary Learning
Free learning opportunities are growing rapidly, and moving away from the traditional education model, born an indentured to the industrial era. Knowledge is no longer the domain of the higher wealth classes, and can be accessed by anyone with the energy to pursue their goals. Similarly, web-based businesses and employment mean the opportunities to contribute to the evolving knowledge landscape are virtually (get it :) limitless.
Indigenous Heritage.
Western value systems have moved away from understanding of old-world living, for better or worse. Regardless, there is still much to be re-discovered in the ways which modern living has jettisoned traditional modes of being, community values, and internal sensitivities, in favour of trivial pursuits and idolatry behaviours. Much can be gained by a reassessment the hierarchy of importance to which our values are organised, and looking to indigenous cultures will offer much of the guidance.
Sharism
…is a little developed philosophy, but I like the sound of it. The idea of sharing what there is to be shared, ideas, technology, resources, spaces …rather than monopolising them feels like a better future than the greed riddled contemporary model. The era of open source is one beginning which can lead the way in this space.
Worker Co-ops
Failing businesses are being bought out or taken over by the employees of the company, then run by those same employees. The resulting business orients itself around its workers, rather than profits, which is proving to be extremely beneficial to the workers, and more sustainable as a company.
Safe Substance Use
The decriminalisation of recreational drugs is bringing a tidal shift in positive economic and social benefits to all countries which are adopting rational policy around use. Portugal is leading the way with significant reductions in drug use, related harm, infection transmission, deaths, and a rise in prevention. The US governments however, is sticking with the “War on Drugs” policy, as it provides inmates for its’ corrupt corporatised jail system, which makes money off each offender who is sent down.
Corporations
Media
What is it that mainstream media is not delivering? The big money interests are firmly attached to media which only deal in stories which compliment their sponsors. The largest sponsors don’t want stories showing how sugary drinks cause obesity, how pesticides are causing cancer, or that opioid addiction was created within the sales methodology of the pharmaceutical company. Therefore, those stories will receive scant coverage, whereas a story which highlights the
Crony Contracting
Unfortunately, all primary construction oriented work requires complex management structures to manage their crews. The larger the contractor, the larger the overhead costs, and the larger pyramid of power, of which the sharp is little more than a pyramid scheme.
War Machine Engineering
War is one of the most profitable industries on the planet. Build machines, weapons and supply networks, find large scale targets to destroy, then set about rebuilding the decimated infrastructure, whilst charging that newly consigned client pirate rates to do so.
Big data
Its hard to imagine as a consumer, where the giant of big data derives its value. One person, doing things one day at a time, in a seemingly similar manner to all the others, and in similar enough way which things have always been done. From the birds eye view of big data, where the entire picture is scooped up wholesale, its drilling back down that reveals the treasure. Looking at patterns in data is immensely valuable to corporations looking to grab a consumers’ attention.
Nuclear Energy
I’m stuck on the fence as to the future of nuclear energy. The former poster child for eternally clean energy sources has some catastrophic shortcomings. The rising stockpile of toxic waste waiting to leach out and destroy ecospheres is alarming, and the ever present threat of catastrophic failure to nuclear facilities leaves the energy source in a risk category which sits like a ticking time bomb. If however the risks can be mitigated, the energy generation capability is immense.
Corporate Farming
Develop a agri-product, and coerce farmers to buy it. Then tie those farmers into a herbicide and nutrient regime which supports that agri-product. To facilitate the regime, set up a loans system which will indenture the farmer for the rest of their lives, et voila!! The farmer now has no way out. They are bound to produce a standard product, removing capacity for the more industrious to work a little harder or try something different in order to yield a better crop, forced to use a carcinogenic chemical on their farms, and locked into an eternal struggle to manage a debt system which had never been required in the past millennia of agriculture.
Insurance
Beware, the world you live in is perilous, and at any moment it is all going to turn bad - make sure you have insurance, and lots of it, for every eventuality. This is the claim of insurance companies. They have tickled their calculators gently enough to mitigate all your risk completely, and create a little nest-egg for themselves along the way. Hand in hand with the big business and the legal largesse, insurers have grown to be the largest financial institutions on the planet. Yet with all their promises, they are ready to deny your claim because you filled out form 527a-1 incorrectly, or to simply inform you that a virus will not be covered in your claim.
Water Supply
The frontlines for a corporate world war or just wanton monopolising of a natural resource? The big business battle began many years ago as wealthy organisations began purchasing control of fresh water supplies across the planet. Privatisation of natural water assets sets a new horizon for exploitation of the most essential life sustaining substance we have.
Pharmaceuticals
The flip side of the “war on drugs” is the battle to keep the population drugged, legally. Pushing prescription medications with corporate intent has led to the opioid epidemic, and demonstrates the malice of profit over basic health necessity.
Mining
Eco terrorism via land procurement and stripping, push out indigenous tribes from traditional lands, then leave masses of toxic sludge in ponds which leach into the surrounding ecosphere. The standard model has worked for years, and will continue to deliver, so long as political systems receive their kickbacks.
Prisons
The most egregious contemporary example of slavery is within the prison system. Big business works hand in hand with the prison system and law enforcement to provide cheap labour by forcing inmates to escape their boredom for mere pennies per hour. Even the justice system is in on the gig with increasing incarceration penalties being levelled for low level crime in order to maintain and raise the prison population.

Thanks for coming to Corporatopoly. The board game is entering its second round of Alpha test phase and you have the opportunity to help in its development. Any feedback on the game, its play procedure, rules, themes, design, or other, will be greatly appreciated.
Corporatopoly is intended to be open-source, both in collaboration and custodianship. If you are interested in being part of the Corporatopoly community, please send an email to john@corporatopoly.org detailing how you would like to be involved and any skills you wish to add to the mix. As we are at an infantile stage, help is required in all areas, here are a few…legal, programming, blockchain development, social media, design, research, market research, geopolitical theory, …and many more.
Corporatopoly is intended to be a cyber entity, preferring not to be anchored by location or political system. In this way, the development and distribution can remain unfettered, yet will still pay its way within local economies. The development of this capacity is required early in the projects’ evolution, any assistance in this area will be greatly appreciated.
‘Custodianship’ or ‘governance’ of the game is not yet developed and may evolve as contributors join the team. At this stage, there is no intention to create monetary value, so all efforts will be geared toward developing the game for its own sake. If at some stage a commercial product becomes viable, consideration will be given to those who have contributed to the development. Custodianship will be about the contribution to any and/or all aspects of the project as it evolves.

Обновление правил после тестирования. Одной из главных вещей, которые мы обнаружили, было то, что по предыдущим правилам можно было слишком быстро исчерпать деньги и отстать, если вы не попадали в новые сообщества. Мы также обнаружили, что если вы пытались победить, контролируя 3/4 сообществ, это было сложно, поэтому мы придумываем больше вариаций в механике карты Elect.
Мы будем обновлять правила и дополнять их со временем. А пока берегите себя и оставайтесь дома.

В ответ на отзывы о видимости печатной версии A4 мы изменим некоторые графические элементы, в частности, чтобы выделить детали вставных блоков. Мы также изменили количество сообществ, выдаваемых в начале игры, и критерии выживания (минимум 3 сообщества).
Компоненты
Для игры вам понадобится одна печатная доска (есть версия формата А2 на 1 страницу и версия формата А4 на 4 страницы) , печатные карты Elect , карты Corporation , карты Bank и карта правила LOW . Все это можно найти в ZIP-файле ниже или на главной странице игры. Каждому игроку нужна своя фишка игрока и не менее 30 жетонов игроков . В идеале эти жетоны должны быть того же цвета, что и фишка вашего игрока , и могут быть такими простыми, как цветной квадрат, достаточно маленький, чтобы поместиться в один из игровых квадратов на доске. Если у вас есть цветной картон, вырежьте квадраты размером 1 см и создайте пирамиду для своей фишки игрока. В качестве альтернативы используйте стеклянные бусины или монеты , просто убедитесь, что вы можете отличить свои фишки от фишек других игроков.
Настройка игры

Shuffle all Elect Cards and place them face down on the green rectangle on the board.

Place all the Bank Cards face up in a pile on the 'Banks' rectangle on the board.

Fold up and place the LOW Card on the LOW rectangle on the board.

Each player makes sure they have 1 player piece, and 30 player tokens of the same colour.

Each player receives $5 billion in cash from the Federal Deserve Bank.

Throw a dice to determine who begins first. Play proceeds clockwise from that player. Upon first turn, each player chooses a country, and populates that country with four tokens on any squares in the outer ring (Peoples Way) , and one token in the "Governor" position in the second ring (Democracy Drive) . If playing with 2 players, place additional 5 player tokens around the board. If 3 players, additional 4 tokens, 4 players - extra 3 tokens, 5 players - extra 2 tokens, 6 players - 1 extra token. (maximum of 2 tokens per country other than your own)

How to Win
1. Develop democratic support over more than half of the board, or
2. Eliminate all other players. or
3. Earn $1tn (one trillion dollars, $1,000,000,000,000)
Peoples Way
(outer ring)
Make your way around the board, gathering community leadership support which is signalled by laying your player token in any community which you land in. Claim $500mn, if you have a majority in that square.
If you land on an "Elect"card, play the card as per instructions on the card, hold the card, or redeem it for $1bn. Place your token also and collect $500mn (only if you have majority in that square)
If you land on a 'parliamentary door', upon your next turn you may proceed to Democracy Drive (second ring) counting your first space at the corresponding parliamentary door in that country.
Democracy Drive
(second ring from outside)
On Democracy Drive, you will have the option to buy representative seats in the parliament, or you gain your seats via majority community leadership (you must land on seats in any country you wish claim, then either purchase, or, claim via majority community leadership). When you have a majority representation in any one country, you take control of that countrys parliament. Place a player token in the "Governor" square (centre inset).
Control of any Governor position allows you access to draw down $50bn from that countrys' Reserve Bank.
Corporate Row
(third ring from outside)
Any time a double is thrown, a player can move to Corporate Row. This can also be done buy paying $20bn at the start of any turn.
LOW (Leader Of the World)
To become LOW, you must be complete three turns in Corporate Row, then pay your way in ($50bn).
Rules for LOW on card.
At the start of each player's turn, follow these steps based on your situation in the game.

People's Way
Movement around People's Way is clockwise and a player takes the value of two dice rolled to determine how many spaces to move. When you land on a square in People's Way, you claim leadership by placing a player token in that square. If you have gained the majority support of that community (having the most markers there), you gain $500M. You can have multiple player tokens on a square as well as those of different players. The player with the most tokens on a square in People's Way at any one time is considered to have the majority Support in that community square.
Elect Card
Landing on a square with a tick mark on it allows you to draw a card from the Elect Pile. This card can be played immediately, held, or redeemed for $1bn. Refer to information on the cards to discover play possibilities.
Democracy Drive
You can move to Democracy drive from People's Way in three ways.
1. Enter via a parliamentary door, at the start of any turn, if you are on one of the door squares. Start counting your next move at the corresponding door on Democracy Drive
2. If you pay $5bn electioneering costs to gain a representative seat, and that triggers a majority in the parliament, you may move to the governor position and claim it with a player marker.
3. If you gain leadership of 4 communities, you are automatically able to claim the Governor position. Move to Governor position and place a player marker.
To return to Peoples Way, you may move through a parliamentary door during any move, counting the square on Democracy Drive, then next counting at the corresponding door on Peoples Way.
Democracy Drive offers an option as to how you move. There are 3 Democracy spaces and 1 Governor space in each country. Moving along you may decide to land on the Governor space or not. See the example below when Player throws a 3 and entering into Korea:

Corporate Row
You can move to Corporate Row any time you roll a double. Move to any Bank Square on Corporate Row. Roll again, and choose one of the two values, or the collective value. You may move either left or right.To move out of Corporate Row, throw a double, or pay $10bn legal costs. Exit to any position square on Democracy Drive.
When landing in a square on Corporate Row (apart from the initial Bank Square you choose to start on), you have to either pay the tariff cost of that Corporation (or Bank) or buy it if it is unowned. If it is owned by another player, you must pay the tariff cost. If you cannot, see special rule HERE.
The tariff and cost are represented by the numbers on the edge (Left = Purchase Cost, Right = Tariff, in $bn) of the board corresponding to that Corporation or Bank. When paying the tariff to an unowned Corporation or Bank, the money is placed under the board at the edge spot of that Corporation or Bank.
Place a player token on the Corporation square at the edge of the board to indicate its yours.
To buy a Corporation, pay the amount and take that Corp card from the stack. You now own that Corporation and can use it as an ACTION during phase 4. See HERE on how Corporation Cards work.
At any time during your turn or if you need money, you can attempt to sell your Corporation to any player. You must both come to an agreement on the sale price.

Elect Cards
You can choose to play 1 Elect Card per ACTION. Some can be used one time only, (as per left card), or held for an ongoing effect (right). Once you use an Elect Card, you must return it to the bottom of the Elect Card pile.
Ongoing effect cards need to be played once as an ACTION, but then continue to work for as long as the player is holding them. (Place it somewhere face up in front of you)
Claiming versus Populating
Some cards will allow you to either claim or populate a community or Democracy square.
Populating a square means you are placing one of your player tokens in that Square. Remember, you only gain the $500mn when you gain majority leadership in a community square.
Claiming a square means you choose the Player with the Majority of tokens in that square and replace all their markers with your own. If a square has no player tokens, you can still claim that square, but it would have the same effect as populating that square.
Imprisoning and Releasing community leaders
Some cards and effects will allow you to either imprison or release community leaders. Imprisoning a community leader means that token is moved the Jail section for that country.
Releasing a community leader means returning the player marker to any community square in their country.
Corporation Cards
Corporation Cards can be played as one of your ACTIONS. The way Corporations interact are represented on the cards. The segments around the icons indicate a value of 1, 2, or 3 power bars

When you choose to play a Corporation you can do one of two things.

Use corporation to start earning from communities
Place Corporation card on board between Peoples Way and Democratic Drive. That corporation now earns money from the communities in that country. The basic tariff must be payed by the all players who have player tokens in that country. -
If a player has another corporation (or bank) which works with the card being played, the tariff is multiplied accordingly.

For example, Sore Civic exploits bananas as a resource at 2 power bars. If this card is played into a country whose resource is bananas (Guatemala) the tariff goes up 2x. If that person also holds a corporation which has a food industry effect, the tariff rises another 1x. The power bars add together, i.e. 1 basic tariff, plus 2 for bananas, plus 1 for food industry -
$2bn, plus 3x basic tariff ($6bn) = $8bn tariff, to be paid by all players in that country.
Important Rules about Corporation Cards

A player can have a maximum of 2 Corporations active in a country at any one time

A country can only have 3 Corporations drawing from it at one time.

To become the Leader Of the World (LOW), pay $50bn electioneering costs during your move phase, and only if no other player is currently LOW. Move your Player to the centre of the board.
Your divisive election campaign alienates 50% of your support base. Remove every second of your community leaders from the board, and relinquish all your Elect Cards to the bottom of the Elect pile.
You must hold the position of LOW for three turns minimum, after which you may either pay $20BN or if you cannot, lose all your cash and move to the Jail section for two turns (You still keep any Corporations you own, but any that are currently drawing from a country will be returned to you.

There are some special rules associated with some Elect Cards and Corporations, as well as being the LOW, listed below:

Imprisoning a Community: This means that the targeted community can no longer generate wealth for corporations, does not count towards the total number of communities for their supporter for the purposes of gaining community power, but still count towards the player whom they support required 2 minimum supporting communities.

Killing off a Community: This means the support from that community to everyone is lost. Remove all Support Markers from that square.

Kill off the population of an oil-rich country: All communities of an oil-rich country (a country with the oil barrel symbol) are killed off as per rules above.

Running out of money: In this game, it can be easy to run out of money if you are not careful. Especially if you dip into the treasury of a country only to have it taken away from you by another player. If you ever run out of money, you have essentially two turns to make it back through normal play or you can attempt to sell what you have to other players. Anything you own can be sold, from Support Markers (swap your Marker with the other player's), to Elect Cards, to Corporations and Banks. The only thing that cannot be sold is your position as LOW. It is up to the two of you to decide on how much you sell anything.

Paying Tariff: Whenever you land on a Corporation or Bank in Corporate Row and you cannot afford the buy cost, you must pay the tariff amount. This will either go to the player owning that Corporation or Bank, or will go to Corporation or Bank and placed under their edge location on the side of the board. When a player gains control of that Corporation or Bank in the future, they gain control of all money there as well.

Specific resource mention: Some effects (such as the one mentioned above) will refer to a specific resource. These can be seen between Democracy Drive and the Corporate Row of a country. Resources are exploited by Corporations. To prevent exploitation of that resource, an opposing player must have the Majority Support of at least 4 communities in that country or 3 squares in Democracy Drive of that country.
